High Court: Najib's House Arrest Order Invalid as Agong Must Follow Constitutional Procedures
PUTRAJAYA: The prosecution has rejected Najib Razak’s defence that over RM2 billion found in his accounts were Saudi donations, saying he failed to prove the authenticity of four purported donation letters.
Deputy public prosecutor Deepa Nair Thevaharan said only photocopies of the letters were shown in court and none were verified as genuine. She called Najib’s reliance on them his “lifeline” in the 1MDB trial but said no original letters or proof were produced.
Citing the film A Few Good Men, she said, “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth,” adding the defence offered “no authenticity, just stories.”
Another prosecutor, Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib, described Najib’s defence as “bare denial,” calling the Saudi donation narrative “a tale surpassing Arabian Nights.”
Najib faces 21 money laundering and abuse of power charges involving RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds. The trial continues tomorrow.
