A US-based recruiter known as Michael earned over $280,000 by secretly working three remote jobs at once, before layoffs brought the strategy to an end.
“The only thing I could think about was: if I could get another job, I could save that whole salary,” he said.
In 2020, Michael held a low-demand remote recruiting role and began exploring ways to use his spare time. In 2021, he discovered the “overemployed” trend online but waited until early 2022 to take a second job in finance.
By mid-2022, he was working about six hours daily across two jobs. In September 2022, he added a third role at a consulting firm, restructuring his schedule from 5 a.m. through early afternoon.
Despite holding three full-time roles, he said he rarely worked 40 hours weekly. However, by late 2022, rising interest rates and slowing hiring began closing job openings.
He was laid off from his first role in late 2022, followed by the others in subsequent months. By 2024, he faced prolonged unemployment and financial strain.
Michael has since moved into the insurance sector, seeking stability after what he described as a short-lived but impactful experience.
