Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stressed that no political party in Malaysia can claim undisputed dominance, crediting DAP’s decades-long struggle for establishing a two-party system. Speaking in an interview with Oriental Daily to mark DAP’s 60th anniversary, Chow highlighted the party’s role in strengthening democratic checks and balances, including implementing a two-term limit for Penang’s chief ministership.
Chow, who is nearing the end of his tenure, pointed to Penang’s achievements since 2008, including greener urban landscapes, improved management, and people-focused policies. He emphasized the state’s resilience in the semiconductor industry, noting that Penang has made significant strides over the past decade by promoting innovation and industrial transformation. Initiatives such as “Penang Silicon Design @ 5km+” have attracted high-value semiconductor investments, though industrial land shortages remain a challenge.
Despite global headwinds, including US tariff policies, Penang’s trade performance remains stable, with strong investor interest. Chow also highlighted infrastructure projects like the Mutiara LRT and Silicon Valley Island reclamation, which he believes have gained public support. Addressing young voters, he cited education funding, STEM initiatives, and environmental programs as examples of policies designed to engage youth. Chow concluded that governance must continue progressing despite political challenges.
