PETRONAS has officially decided to relinquish its interest in a high-profile, ultra-deepwater exploration block offshore Brazil after failing to secure a commercial discovery.
Key Highlights of the ExitThe Location: The dropped acreage is situated in the Campos Basin, a historically prolific offshore region in Brazil. The Reason: Operations were halted following poor exploration and appraisal results, with drilling activities failing to yield commercially viable oil or gas deposits.
Strategic Shift: This exit aligns with a wider restructuring of PETRONAS’ Brazilian footprint. Earlier this year, the company also agreed to sell its 50% stake in the producing Tartaruga Verde and Espadarte (Module III) fields back to Brazil’s state-run Petrobras for US$450 million.
Despite scaling back its deepwater exploration assets in the Campos Basin, PETRONAS maintains an active down-stream presence in South America, including a rapidly expanding network of fuel stations across Brazil.
