Malaysia Bans Export of Unprocessed Rare Earths, Pushes for Downstream Investment
KUALA LUMPUR — China has expressed readiness to provide Malaysia with technical and technological assistance in rare earths processing, but insisted that any cooperation involve only government-linked companies, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said. In a parliamentary reply on Aug 27, he said President Xi Jinping conveyed the offer during his visit to Kuala Lumpur in April. Discussions are still in early stages with no agreements signed. Malaysia, which holds an estimated 16.1 million metric tons of rare earth deposits, has banned raw exports to protect resources and seeks to strengthen its processing capabilities. China remains the world’s dominant player in the sector, while Australian miner Lynas already operates a plant in Pahang.
