Recovering 1MDB debts comes first, says Home Minister

Home Minister Senator Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the Malaysian government’s priority is recovering assets linked to embezzled 1MDB funds rather than capturing fugitive financier Jho Low.

He emphasized that asset repatriation is more crucial, especially following a settlement between Low and the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

This settlement involves the recovery of over US$100 million and cooperation in transferring additional 1MDB-linked assets from Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Singapore to Malaysia. The focus on asset recovery aligns with previous administrations’ efforts.

“Our focus is on asset repatriation. It is understood that there has been a resolution between the DOJ and Jho Low.

“This is a matter for the DOJ, but when it involves our nation’s assets returned to the DOJ, our focus naturally shifts to the repatriation of national assets,” he told reporters at a press conference here today.
