Ringgit Opens Slightly Higher Amid Easing Oil Prices

The ringgit strengthened slightly against major currencies due to easing oil prices and geopolitical developments, influencing market sentiment.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22, 2026, The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar and a basket of major currencies on Tuesday, supported by improved sentiment as global oil prices eased.

At 8am, the local unit edged up to 4.0750/0805 against the greenback from Monday’s close of 4.0755/0800. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said Brent crude fell 3.4% to US$100.34 per barrel after satellite data showed Saudi Arabia diverted exports via the Strait of Hormuz following the East-West pipeline shutdown.

Oil Prices

Saudi crude exports through the Strait reportedly surged to 2.9 million barrels per day from 700,000 in August. Afzanizam added that US President Donald Trump’s willingness to meet Iran’s president at the UN General Assembly also buoyed sentiment.

The ringgit gained against the euro, pound and yen, traded mixed against ASEAN peers, and remained steady against the Philippine peso.
