Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah revealed that electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining has caused RM4.8 billion in losses from 2018 to June 2025. This year alone recorded 1,800 cases. He said the surge is driven by bitcoin’s value exceeding RM500,000 per unit, motivating more people to steal electricity for mining. Akmal spoke after a joint operation in Alor Setar targeting seven premises suspected of theft under the Electricity Supply Act 1990. He urged public cooperation to report illegal connections to curb the alarming trend.
