KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7, 2026 — Shanghai Electric’s latest contract for the Samalaju Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Unit 3 project in Sarawak has been hailed by China News Service (CNS) as a significant milestone for the international commercialisation of China’s heavy-duty gas turbine technology.
According to a CNS report, the project represents the first overseas deployment of a heavy-duty gas turbine manufactured by Shanghai Electric, highlighting the growing competitiveness of Chinese-made high-end power generation equipment in global markets.

Under the agreement, Shanghai Electric will provide a complete package of key equipment for the 500MW power plant, including gas and steam turbines, generators, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and air-cooling systems. The company will also serve as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor while providing long-term lifecycle services for the project.
Industry experts cited by CNS described the project as more than a conventional equipment export, saying it demonstrates China’s ability to compete internationally in the commercial heavy-duty gas turbine segment.
The report noted that Shanghai Electric’s integrated approach, which combines core equipment manufacturing, project execution and long-term support under a single framework, reduces complexity for project owners and contractors.
CNS also highlighted growing global demand for turnkey energy solutions, particularly as the international gas turbine market faces supply constraints, with demand continuing to outpace manufacturing capacity.
