Singapore PM’s Dire Warning: Global Trade War Looms as U.S. Tariffs Shatter the Old Order
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, campaigning for Saturday’s election, warned of a “new storm” from US President Donald Trump’s trade war, necessitating a “major restructuring” of Singapore’s trade-reliant economy. Speaking at a rally, Wong, who became premier in 2024, urged voters to support the People’s Action Party (PAP) to maintain stability amid global economic turbulence caused by Trump’s tariffs, paused for most countries except China.
He highlighted opportunities in Asia’s growing market for supply chain reconfiguration. The opposition, particularly the Workers’ Party, criticizes PAP over rising living and housing costs, gaining support but unlikely to unseat the long-ruling PAP.
