Malaysia’s SST on Imported Fruits Boosts Local Produce Demand
REMBAU – The implementation of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) on imported fruits is expected to boost demand for local agricultural products, said Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Director-General Abdul Rashid Bahri. While it is too early to fully assess its impact, current trends show increasing support for local produce. FAMA has intensified campaigns promoting Malaysian fruits and vegetables through schools, Agro Madani programmes, and upcoming national events like FAMA Fest on July 22. Rashid noted local fruits such as bananas and pineapples have become the main choices for official government events, replacing imported apples, oranges, and grapes. He added that Kopiesatu, FAMA’s local coffee brand, is also expanding, with 23 outlets nationwide, strengthening Malaysia’s coffee industry and promoting high-quality local brands.
