Former U.S. President Donald Trump outlined a “Reciprocal Tariff” policy, aiming to make trade fairer for the United States by charging other countries the same tariffs they impose on the U.S. He emphasized that nations using Value-Added Taxes (VATs), subsidies, and nonmonetary trade barriers would be treated similarly to those with tariffs. Trump argued that for years, the U.S. had been treated unfairly in trade and declared:
“For purposes of Fairness, I will charge a RECIPROCAL Tariff… No more, no less!”
“Sending merchandise, product, or anything by any other name through another Country, for purposes of unfairly harming America, will not be accepted.”
“There are no Tariffs if you manufacture or build your product in the United States.”
He insisted this system would “bring Fairness and Prosperity” and create “a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR AMERICAN WORKERS.” He directed key government officials, including the Secretary of State, Commerce Secretary, Treasury Secretary, and U.S. Trade Representative, to ensure this “RECIPROCITY” in trade policy.
