WASHINGTON/LONDON – US President Donald Trump has cautioned Britain against deepening economic ties with China, calling it “very dangerous” as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Beijing for talks with President Xi Jinping. Trump’s remarks came during the premiere of a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, where he was asked about Britain “getting into business” with China.

His warning coincides with Starmer’s landmark trip, the first by a British prime minister to China in eight years, during which cooperation agreements were signed. Starmer defended the move, stressing China’s role as the world’s second-largest economy and Britain’s third-biggest trading partner, saying the visit opened opportunities for jobs and wealth creation. Beijing’s foreign ministry responded that China seeks “mutual benefit and win-win results” with all nations. Trump also criticized Canada’s recent trade agreements with China, threatening 100 per cent tariffs on imports. Starmer will continue his Asia tour with a stop in Japan to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
