Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on semiconductor chips imported from countries that do not manufacture or plan to manufacture chips in the United States.
The policy is intended to boost domestic chip production and will exempt companies that are currently building or have committed to building semiconductor facilities in the U.S.
This move builds on the $52.7 billion subsidy program created by Congress in 2022 to support domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research.
Trump warned companies that try to bypass the policy, saying, “If, for some reason, you say you’re building and you don’t build… we charge you at a later date.”
He added, “100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States… But if you’ve made a commitment to build… there is no tariff.”
