A recent survey, “Tech-Driven Sustainability Trends and Index 2024,” commissioned by Alibaba Cloud, found that 76% of businesses across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East see potential in digital technologies like AI and cloud computing for driving sustainability. However, 61% express concerns over the high energy consumption of these technologies, which remains a key barrier to adoption.

AI and Sustainability

In Malaysia, 76% of businesses are actively leveraging digital technologies for sustainability, and 77% are intrigued by AI’s potential in this space. Yet, 62% acknowledge a knowledge gap in how these technologies can help meet sustainability goals. Additionally, 81% worry that AI’s energy consumption may outweigh its benefits, and 75% cite security risks as a major obstacle to broader adoption of digital solutions.

Key barriers

The survey highlights that 88% of Malaysian businesses prioritize sustainable technology development. However, 68% believe companies are falling behind in adopting AI and cloud computing for sustainability. Key barriers include knowledge gaps (38%), cost constraints (30%), and lack of technical capabilities (31%), adding to existing concerns about energy consumption and security risks.
