Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the necessity of tax reforms and subsidy rationalization in Malaysia to address emerging challenges like AI, digitization, and rising healthcare costs, despite public resistance. Speaking at the Digital Asset Sandbox and Sasana Symposium 2025 on June 17, 2025, he highlighted the need to expand the revenue base to fund public services, education, and healthcare reforms without burdening the poor. The Sales and Service Tax (SST) expansion, effective July 1, 2025, aims to strengthen fiscal stability but has faced pushback for potentially increasing living costs.
Anwar also announced a joint ministerial committee to reform the healthcare system, focusing on affordable, transparent, and value-based private healthcare. He stressed the urgency of structural reforms, including RON95 petrol subsidy rationalization, despite opposition from conservative groups and social media narratives, underscoring the need for clear communication to gain public support.
