Anwar Ibrahim is under pressure to deliver concrete reforms after two years in power
KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to consider releasing Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) procurement funds to cover operational expenditure. Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, conveyed the decision during a meeting with Defence Ministry and Armed Forces leaders at Wisma Perwira on Feb 24.
Anwar stressed that while procurement freezes linked to corruption must be handled carefully, exemptions can be made to ensure military readiness and ongoing operations are not compromised.
He also emphasised transparency in procurement processes and expressed support for strengthening governance within the Defence Ministry.
Khaled added that Anwar highlighted the importance of safeguarding military personnel’s welfare, including better housing provisions, while noting the necessity of readiness amid evolving regional and global geopolitical developments.
