Anwar Ibrahim is under pressure to deliver concrete reforms after two years in power
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has applied to strike out a lawsuit filed by Malaysian Advancement Party president P Waythamoorthy, calling it politically motivated and legally flawed. The suit challenges the legality of Anwar’s 2022 election as Tambun MP and his subsequent appointment as prime minister, arguing that his disqualification as an MP was never formally revoked by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong despite a 2018 royal pardon.
In his court filing, Anwar said the case was an abuse of process meant to gain political mileage, noting it contravened constitutional and statutory procedures. He cited Article 118 of the Federal Constitution and Sections 33, 34, and 38 of the Election Offences Act, which require any election challenge to be filed as an election petition within a strict timeframe.
Waythamoorthy insists Anwar’s pardon did not explicitly revoke his disqualification, but the Attorney-General’s Chambers maintains the royal pardon fully restored his eligibility and cleared all offences.
