Bangkok tower collapse: Tycoon and 14 others surrender to police

In Bangkok, a 30-storey State Audit Office tower, under construction by Italian Thai Development, collapsed during a 7.7 magnitude earthquake from Myanmar in March, killing 92 workers with four still missing. On Friday, the company’s president, Premchai Karnasuta, and 14 others surrendered to police, facing charges of negligence and breaching construction regulations. Investigations revealed non-compliant architectural designs, substandard materials like concrete and steel, and forged engineering documents. A watchdog suggested corruption may have played a role, supported by early tests showing substandard steel. The 15 suspects, denying all charges, were brought to court for pre-trial proceedings, with two more expected to report on Monday.
