Ivan Ureña-Valdes, a data analyst at Block for nearly four years, was unexpectedly laid off during a round of companywide cuts attributed to artificial intelligence.
He received the news via email from Jack Dorsey while interviewing a candidate, leaving him unable to complete the process. Ureña-Valdes, the sole provider for his family, said the decision was not performance-related, as he was working on major projects.
He acknowledged AI’s growing role in automating data tasks, noting how quickly processes like dataset selection and output generation had become streamlined.
While grateful for severance benefits, he expressed concern about the broader impact of AI on jobs, predicting more layoffs across industries.
Despite his pessimism about the future of data roles, he remains hopeful about finding new opportunities, though he admits replicating Block’s supportive environment and fair pay will be difficult. His story highlights the disruptive force of AI reshaping the workforce.
