TANJONG MALIM: Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD will set up an assembly plant here by 2026, in a move expected to create thousands of jobs and strengthen Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem. State executive councillor Loh Sze Yee said the first phase of the 60-hectare project will begin construction at the end of August, with a launch on Sept 4 by Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad. The plant will empower local talent with green technology skills and expand opportunities for suppliers. Founded in 1995, BYD is now one of the world’s largest EV makers, challenging Tesla globally with affordable, mass-market models.
