Canon Preserves Penang’s Important Bird and Biodiversity Area

Canon Marketing Malaysia has kicked off its annual “One Canon One Tree” campaign with a tree-planting initiative in Sungai Tembus, Penang.

The campaign, established in 2016, aims to support Malaysia’s target of becoming a carbon-neutral nation by 2050. Canon, in collaboration with Shorebirds Peninsular Malaysia Project (SPMP) and Unit Nelayan Sungai Tembus, planted 200 mangrove trees to preserve Malaysia’s natural beauty and raise awareness about the importance of ecological conservation, coinciding with World Environment Day.

Mangrove trees play a critical role in coastal protection, climate change mitigation, and sustaining marine ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

Sungai Tembus, home to the most intact mangrove forest in Penang, holds significant biodiversity importance. It is a vital area for migratory birds, with over 100 species gathering between March and June each year. The presence of various bird species such as openbills, storks, and herons helps regulate pest populations, benefiting local rice farmers. The river is part of the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda, which requires preservation to safeguard bird populations in Penang.

Daren Tan, Head of Canon Marketing Malaysia’s Penang Branch, sayd, “Our goals extend beyond supporting local fishermen and improving their livelihoods, it encompasses combating climate change and safeguarding our local cherished natural heritage”.

36 Canon staff participated in the “One Canon One Tree” mangrove planting event which also included restoration of the mangrove forest and refreshing the paint at the Unit Nelayan Sungai Tembus community hall.

“Speaking on behalf of the Canon team that was part of this programme, this endeavour holds deep significance to us as we contribute to the preservation of mangroves and heed the urgent call to support and acknowledge grassroots initiatives that protect our natural world. We aim to raise awareness about Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and their vital role in maintaining the ecological balance in Penang and the rest of the country,” he says.

Canon’s tree-planting effort involved 36 dedicated staff members who not only planted trees but also refurbished Unit Nelayan’s community hall. The company has consistently demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship through initiatives such as “One Canon One Tree.” Moving forward, Canon plans to expand its efforts on a national scale, planting trees and promoting ecological conservation in various locations across Malaysia.
