Carbon emissions: Airlines allowed now to impose extra fees

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announces that Malaysian airlines will be allowed to impose extra fees to cover carbon emissions.

While some may use these fees to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), others may opt for car bon credits to offset emissions. However, adoption of these measures will not be mandatory for all airlines.

Loke emphasizes the need to balance environmental obligations with consumer interests to avoid burdening passengers or harming the aviation industry.

Amendments to regulations are required before airlines can implement these fees in Malaysia, unlike in Singapore where a green fuel levy will be imposed from 2026.
