KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian retailers must prioritise checkout performance to capture increased spending during the 2026 peak season, according to Soon Yean Lee, Country Manager Malaysia at Adyen. With Thaipusam, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri falling within a short period alongside Visit Malaysia 2026, retailers are expected to experience sustained consumer and tourist activity.
Lee said while promotions can attract shoppers, payment performance ultimately determines whether transactions are completed.
International visitors also bring diverse payment preferences, including different cards and digital wallets, making flexible payment acceptance crucial.
Retailers are encouraged to ensure stable payment systems, expand payment options and maintain consistent reliability during peak traffic periods. Improvements such as contactless payments, mobile point-of-sale systems and optimised online checkout experiences can help reduce queues and prevent transaction failures.
Lee noted that small operational upgrades could help retailers convert festive demand into sustained revenue growth.
