DAP gives Anwar 6 months for reforms but will not let this government fall

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has issued a six-month deadline for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to deliver visible reforms, warning that the party will reassess its role in the Madani government if tangible progress is lacking, though he firmly ruled out withdrawing support and collapsing the administration before the next general election.

Reforms

Here are the main points from Anthony Loke’s interview with Chinese-language YouTube channel “The Keywords”.regarding DAP’s stance on the Madani government:

  1. Six-month ultimatum for reforms: DAP gives Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government six months (roughly until mid-2026) to show meaningful, tangible reforms and reverse negative public perception.
  2. DAP will NOT bring down the government: Loke repeatedly and emphatically stated that DAP will not withdraw confidence or let the Madani government collapse before the next general election (GE16), even if reforms fail.
    • Direct quote: “DAP will not let this government fall until the next general election.”
    • Reason: DAP holds 40 parliamentary seats — pulling all of them would instantly topple the government, which the party refuses to do.
  3. Reassessment of DAP’s role after six months: If sufficient progress is not seen, DAP will reassess its position in the government. Possible options include:
    • Withdrawing DAP ministers from the cabinet
    • Moving to the government backbenches
    • Other adjustments short of withdrawing parliamentary support
  4. Trigger for the strong statement: The warning comes after DAP’s devastating defeat in the Sabah state election on 29 Nov 2025 (all 8 candidates lost), which exposed voter dissatisfaction with the party being seen as having “gone silent” after joining federal power.
  5. DAP still wants Anwar to succeed: Loke stressed that the party’s ultimate goal is for Anwar to successfully implement reforms and win a second term, because “if Anwar succeeds in reforming, it means Malaysia succeeds.”
  6. Acknowledgment that change takes time: Loke said not everything can be fixed in six months, but there must be visible progress and renewed hope to improve public perception.

In summary:

DAP is openly pressuring Anwar for faster and bolder reforms within six months, threatening to downgrade its role in government if results are lacking — but has drawn a firm red line that it will not cause the unity government to fall before the next general election.
