Indonesia’s Finance Minister Apologizes After Home Ransacked

JAKARTA – Finance Minister Sri Mulyani issued a public ‘apology’ after her Bintaro home was looted twice during nationwide protests against the government. Demonstrations erupted across Indonesia over lawmakers’ financial perks and the death of a delivery driver struck by a police tactical vehicle. Several senior lawmakers, including Ahmad Sahroni, also saw their homes targeted.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Sri Mulyani acknowledged public anger and expressed gratitude to Indonesians — from students to small businesses — for their “suggestions, sarcasm, and even insults.” She stressed that laws are the product of collective work between the government, lawmakers, and the people, urging citizens to seek judicial reviews at the Constitutional or Supreme Court instead of resorting to violence.

She emphasized strengthening democracy “in a civilized manner, not with anarchy or repression.” Meanwhile, Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto dismissed speculation of her resignation, saying she continues to attend cabinet meetings.
