IMF and Putrajaya - Same wave length?
Speculation is growing that Malaysia’s next general election (GE16) could be called as early as the second half of 2026, ahead of the constitutional deadline in 2028. Channel checks suggest grassroots party machinery has been told to prepare after Hari Raya, while government agencies are reportedly on standby.
Historically, the FBM KLCI tends to trend modestly higher three to six months before elections, though volatility rises closer to polling day. If GE16 is held in 2H2026, investors may see gradual gains earlier in the year, followed by consolidation as political uncertainty peaks.
Beyond election sentiment, other factors are expected to drive market performance: stronger tourist arrivals under Visit Malaysia 2026, resilient household spending, data centre investment, and firm external demand from the AI-driven semiconductor upcycle.
Sector analysis shows financial and consumer stocks consistently outperform ahead of elections. Banks such as Maybank, Public Bank, and CIMB carry significant weight in the index, while consumer counters benefit from stronger consumption and policy measures. Preferred picks include AQUAWALK (BUY, TP: RM0.37) and CCK (BUY, TP: RM1.62).
Overall, while global volatility persists, GE16 could provide a modest tailwind, reinforcing Malaysia’s steady market outlook.
