US equities closed broadly lower overnight as investors remained cautious following the latest inflation data and ahead of further guidance from the Federal Reserve at the Jackson Hole symposium.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.21%, while the S&P 500 edged down 0.02% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.08%.
The latest US inflation data showed core PCE inflation rising 3.3% year-on-year in July, keeping concerns over persistent price pressures in focus. Treasury yields were little changed as investors awaited clearer signals on the Fed’s interest-rate outlook.
In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 was broadly flat, easing 0.01%. Weakness in oil and gas stocks offset gains in travel, banking and mining counters.
Asian markets were mostly higher, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 rising 0.62%, South Korea’s Kospi gaining 0.97%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advancing around 0.56% and China’s Shanghai Composite increasing 0.59%.
Global Market Cautious
Global sentiment could receive support from Nvidia’s stronger-than-expected earnings and upbeat revenue outlook, reinforcing confidence in the artificial intelligence investment theme.
Technology and semiconductor stocks may therefore remain in focus, although elevated inflation and uncertainty over the timing of future US rate cuts could limit broader market gains.
Investors will closely monitor the Jackson Hole symposium for clues on monetary policy, while corporate earnings and economic data are expected to remain key drivers.
Overall, trading is likely to remain selective, with stronger earnings supporting individual counters while macroeconomic uncertainty continues to cap risk appetite.
