YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, inserting a plastic container into the RVM witnessed by Adelene Foo, Managing Director of Grab Malaysia and Dato' Nick Boden, Chief Executive Officer of KLEAN.
Grab Malaysia has joined forces with KLEAN, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&N), and the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) to introduce 18 AI-driven Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) across strategic locations in the Klang Valley. This initiative is part of Grab’s commitment to achieving zero packaging waste in nature by 2040, aiming to make it easier for consumers to contribute to a greener Malaysia.
The RVMs will be placed in areas where they can encourage recycling and sustainable change. Consumers can deposit rinsed plastic food containers and scan the RVMs’ QR codes to redeem vouchers using collected KLEAN points. The collected items, including plastic food containers, aluminium cans, and PET bottles, will be processed by Asasrama Sdn Bhd into raw materials for various purposes, such as new products and furniture fillings.
This collaboration aligns with the Malaysian government’s goal to phase out single-use non-biodegradable plastics and promote sustainable alternatives. The pilot project is set to run for six months, and the findings will support Grab’s efforts to increase recycling rates among its users.
The RVMs, powered by AI, will not only encourage recycling but also contribute to positive environmental change. KLEAN, F&N, and MRANTI see this partnership as a way to rally communities towards greener practices and build a more sustainable Malaysia. It represents a step forward in Grab’s four-lever approach to achieve Zero Packaging Waste to Nature by 2040, building on their efforts to reduce single-use plastics since 2019.
This innovative collaboration between Grab and its partners showcases the commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future for Malaysia.
