The High Court in Shah Alam acquitted three immigration officers—Maizatul Azwa Nasib, Hairulnizam Hasim, and Zamir Hazwan Hamid—of charges related to smuggling nine Bangladeshi migrants at KLIA in July 2017. Judicial Commissioner Wendy Ooi ruled that the defense successfully raised doubts in the prosecution’s case after a thorough evaluation of the evidence. The trio faced charges under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. They were out on RM10,000 bail each. In 2021, they were initially acquitted, but the Court of Appeal ordered them to enter their defense in 2023 following a prosecution appeal. Lawyers Harpal Singh and Rajpal Singh represented the accused, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Suriati Mohamad led the prosecution.
