PUTRAJAYA – The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) in Kota Bharu is set to become a major regional hub as its newly completed expansion goes fully operational this Monday, March 16. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the upgrade has nearly tripled the airport’s capacity, moving from 1.5 million to 4 million passengers per year.
The project comes at a critical time; in 2025, KBR saw a 16.2% surge in traffic, reaching 1.7 million passengers. To manage this growth, the terminal now features dedicated levels for arrivals and departures, alongside a streamlined kerbside layout for taxis and e-hailing services.
Minister Loke emphasized that these enhancements arrive just in time for the festive season, providing a smoother experience for travelers across six domestic routes and the international link to Singapore. Beyond logistics, the expansion is expected to be a primary catalyst for Kelantan’s tourism and economic development, strengthening the state’s connectivity to the rest of the region.
