LNG Market Dynamics in Bangladesh, Japan, and South Korea

LNG demand across Asia presents a mixed landscape. Bangladesh actively seeks LNG imports to meet its growing energy needs, with recent tenders indicating strong demand.

In contrast, Japan grapples with unexpected outages and reduced capacity in its thermal fuel sector, leading to increased LNG purchases despite a general decline in gas consumption. Meanwhile, South Korea experiences a rise in gas consumption for power generation, complemented by stable operations in its nuclear power plants.

These dynamics highlight the varying strategies and challenges faced by Asian nations in managing their energy supplies amid shifting market conditions and infrastructure reliability issues.

Bangladesh: LNG Market Dynamics

Bangladesh is actively seeking additional LNG supplies amid the current market conditions. The state-owned Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) is looking for a 24-25 July delivery. This indicates a steady demand for LNG to meet the country’s energy needs. Despite the overall muted demand in the region, Bangladesh’s proactive steps highlight its ongoing reliance on LNG imports to support its energy infrastructure.

Japan: Supply Concerns Amid Thermal Fuel Outages

Japan’s energy sector is facing multiple challenges, with unexpected outages and reduced capacity for thermal fuels causing significant disruptions:

  1. LNG Storage Levels: As of 30 June, major power utilities reported combined LNG storage levels of 2.09 million tonnes, slightly higher than the previous week and 4% above the five-year average for the end of June. This suggests a cautious approach to maintaining adequate LNG supplies despite lower consumption rates.
  2. Power Plant Outages: Several gas-fired power plants, including Jera’s Chiba and Tokyo Gas’ Ohgishima, have faced unplanned outages, exacerbating supply concerns. These outages, coupled with issues in coal-fired plants like Tohoku Electric’s Haramachi and Noshiro units, underscore the fragility of Japan’s thermal power generation capacity.
  3. Increased Coal Plant Outages: Japan has experienced a significant rise in unexpected coal-fired power plant outages, with a 68.8% increase in June 2024 compared to June 2023. This has forced the country to secure additional LNG, as evidenced by Tohoku Electric’s purchase of around 300,000 tonnes of LNG for summer delivery.
  4. Declining Gas Consumption: Despite these challenges, Japan’s overall gas consumption for power generation is on a decline, reflecting a broader trend of reducing dependence on thermal fuels.

South Korea: Rising Gas Consumption and Nuclear Stability

South Korea’s energy landscape shows a contrasting trend compared to Japan, with an increase in gas consumption for power generation:

  1. Gas Consumption: South Korea’s gas consumption for power generation rose by 1% in the 2023 financial year, indicating a growing reliance on LNG to meet its energy demands. This increase comes alongside a significant reduction in coal consumption, down by 9.2% during the same period.
  2. Nuclear Power Stability: The recent resumption of operations at nuclear power plants Shin-Hanul unit 2 and Hanbit unit 1 marks a notable development in South Korea’s energy sector. These plants, with significant nameplate capacities, enhance the country’s stable and diverse energy mix, reducing over-reliance on any single fuel source.
  3. Outage Management: The efficient handling of outages at nuclear facilities, such as the timely maintenance and restart of Shin-Hanul and Hanbit units, showcases South Korea’s robust energy management practices, ensuring minimal disruptions in power supply.

While Bangladesh seeks to bolster its LNG imports to meet growing energy demands, Japan faces significant challenges due to unexpected outages in its thermal fuel sector, leading to increased LNG purchases. Conversely, South Korea is successfully managing its energy mix with rising gas consumption and stable nuclear power operations, positioning itself more favorably in the regional energy landscape.
