Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned that US tariffs of 10% to 49% on 60 countries, including a 24% tariff on Malaysian goods, would harm the US more by raising prices and living costs, making its goods uncompetitive.
He noted the US’s reliance on global supply chains, like microchips, and suggested Malaysia could switch from Boeing to Airbus, costing the US billions. Mahathir predicted the US would abandon the policy within three months due to self-inflicted economic damage.
“Goods in the US will become more expensive, and workers will demand higher wages, making them uncompetitive.
“If we buy 30 Airbus planes instead of Boeing, each costing nearly half a billion ringgit, that’s the loss the US would face,” Mahathir said.
He also criticized American ignorance of global affairs, citing a US commentator’s false claim about Malaysia’s wealth, refuted by Malaysia’s actual GDP per capita.
