Forecast: Malaysia’s External Trade Set for Recovery in the Coming Year

In November 2023, Malaysia faced a significant economic challenge as its exports experienced a sharp decline of 5.9%. This marked the ninth consecutive month of trade decline, with the overall trade volume plummeting by 2.4% year-on-year. The root cause was attributed to a notable drop in exports, leading to a trade surplus shrinkage to a 3.5-year low of RM12.4 billion.

The primary culprit behind this downward spiral was the weakness observed in Electrical and Electronic (E&E) exports. This sector, a cornerstone of Malaysia’s export market, faced a staggering 13.8% year-on-year decrease.

Moreover, exports to key markets such as China and the United States saw sharper contractions, with China witnessing an 8.4% decline in imports from Malaysia. This decline was driven by reduced shipments of E&E goods and palm oil products, which collectively accounted for a substantial portion of Malaysia’s export portfolio.

External Trade

The country’s export landscape revealed a stark contrast between various sectors. While manufactured goods, particularly E&E exports, nosedived, the mining sector experienced a marginal upturn of 0.5% in exports, chiefly propelled by increased shipments of petroleum products.

Despite the bleak November performance, analysts and experts forecasted a potential recovery in Malaysia’s external trade for the upcoming year.

Projections indicated a turnaround in both exports and imports, veering away from the projected 7.6% and 7.0% declines, respectively, for 2023. However, this hopeful outlook came with a caveat, contingent on several factors that could sway the trade scenario. These included a potential slowdown in demand from advanced economies, escalating geopolitical tensions, and mounting price pressures.

The narrative painted a picture of resilience amid challenges, with Malaysia’s trade prospects hanging in a delicate balance, poised for a potential resurgence while navigating a complex global economic landscape.
