Sarawak plans to establish a direct flight route between Kuching and Phnom Penh after taking over MASwings, enhancing tourism and economic ties. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg discussed collaboration with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on energy, tourism, economic cooperation, and agriculture.

Cambodia’s plans for a halal industrial zone present opportunities for joint ventures with Sarawak’s Muslim community. Both regions aim to collaborate on agriculture, particularly rice production, by sharing expertise and technology to achieve self-sufficiency. The proposed flight route would strengthen people-to-people connections and boost mutual development.

“During my courtesy visit to the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, we’ve talked about the possibilities when we have taken over the (MASWings) airline.
“Establishing a direct Kuching-Phnom Penh route, which would take about two hours, would significantly boost tourism and economic collaboration,” he said when met by reporters after the courtesy visit.
