Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore Ink Deal for Renewable Energy Export
In a milestone for Southeast Asia’s renewable energy ambitions, Laos’ Monsoon Wind project has begun exporting clean electricity to Vietnam, marking a major step toward realising the ASEAN supergrid vision. The 600MW wind farm, featuring 133 turbines across southern Laos, overcame immense logistical, financial, and bureaucratic hurdles over a decade to become the region’s first cross-border wind power exporter.
The project, led by Bangkok-based Impact Electrons Siam, faced its greatest challenge not in construction but in navigating complex diplomacy and multi-nation approvals. Despite delays, it has emerged as a model for future bilateral energy cooperation in the region.
The supergrid — a vast, interconnected network enabling the flow of renewable power from energy-rich areas like Laos and Sarawak to high-demand regions across ASEAN — has long been proposed but slow to materialise. Now, with other links like Malaysia’s Sarawak-Sabah interconnector and Indonesia-Singapore power agreements gaining traction, optimism is building.
Experts warn the supergrid still faces hurdles, including a lack of harmonised regulations and infrastructure investment.
