PETRONAS, through Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) and in collaboration with Beicip Franlab Asia, has launched an Integrated Basin Study to explore untapped potential in the Malay Basin, located offshore Peninsular Malaysia. This study leverages advanced 4D modeling technology, machine learning, and big data to analyze subsurface structures, predict hydrocarbon migration, and identify traps.
Since the 1970s, the Malay Basin has produced over nine billion barrels of oil equivalent, earning its status as a ‘super-basin.’ Recent discoveries, such as Bunga Aster and Bekok Deep, highlight its significant untapped potential, including opportunities for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
MPM Senior General Manager of Resource Exploration, Azmir Zamri, stated that collaborations with Beicip Franlab Asia and Earth Science Analytics aim to redefine possibilities and unlock new opportunities in this prolific basin. PETRONAS remains committed to ensuring sustainable energy supply while managing upstream petroleum activities in Malaysia.
