Malaysia’s first port to put e-PMs into actual operations, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) officially put its first 21 units into service on 11 August 2026. Delivered by Terberg Tractors Malaysia (TTM), the e-PMs support horizontal container movement within the terminal, advancing PTP’s long-term decarbonisation agenda.
Port of Tanjung Pelepas commissions Malaysia’s first electric prime mover fleet, supporting decarbonisation, efficiency and capacity expansion at the terminal.
Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has commissioned Malaysia’s first fleet of electric prime movers (e-PMs), marking a significant step in the country’s maritime decarbonisation efforts and the port’s transition towards greener operations.
The first 21 e-PMs, supplied by Terberg Tractors Malaysia (TTM), entered service on 11 August 2026 to support horizontal container movement within the terminal. The remaining 31 units will be delivered progressively by the end of September, completing PTP’s 52-unit procurement programme.
The initiative follows a procurement agreement signed between PTP and TTM in December 2025. The electric fleet is expected to contribute to PTP’s sustainability goals while improving operational efficiency and supporting the port’s long-term expansion plans.
Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook described the deployment as another Malaysian first for PTP, highlighting the port’s leadership in adopting global maritime technologies.
He also noted that the e-PMs are manufactured locally by TTM in Pasir Gudang, Johor, demonstrating Malaysia’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
PTP Chief Executive Officer Mark Hardiman said the new equipment is part of the port’s expansion programme, which aims to increase annual handling capacity to 16.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2029.
A proof-of-concept conducted between 2023 and 2024 found that an e-PM generated about 4,000 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent monthly, compared with 7,600 kg for conventional units, representing a 48% emissions reduction.
Monthly operational costs per unit were also reduced by 57%.PTP is targeting a 45% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The port has already deployed 245 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes and continues to pursue green infrastructure and international sustainability partnerships.
The e-PM rollout strengthens PTP’s position as a leading regional transshipment hub while supporting cleaner, more efficient and future-ready port operations.
