The public’s eyes, including mine, are on the government and the next Chief Justice: Maimun
Former Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, launched her book Behind the Gavel on July 3, 2025, at the Asian International Arbitration Centre. The nearly 800-page book offers insights into her experiences as Malaysia’s first female Chief Justice, a role she held for six years until her retirement. The book is divided into three parts: personal accounts from those close to her, a selection of notable judgments she wrote, and curated speeches from her tenure. During the launch, attended by Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon and other legal luminaries, Tengku Maimun expressed hope that her tenure contributed to the nation and the rule of law. She emphasized the ongoing challenge for the next Chief Justice and the Malaysian government to uphold judicial independence and integrity, a responsibility she no longer carries but will continue to observe.
Maimun retired expressing “no regrets” during her farewell at the Palace of Justice. She noted that becoming Chief Justice was never her ambition but felt honored to serve, viewing her completion of the term in good health as a blessing.
Despite pressure from some Pakatan Harapan (PH) partners, including DAP, to extend her tenure by six months due to her reforms and integrity, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim did not grant the extension. DAP also supported extending Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar’s term, denying claims of politicizing judicial appointments.
