Five-Year Battle Against Chinese Cyber Adversaries Targeting Southeast Asian Infrastructure
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians lost more than RM2.7 billion to online crimes from January to November 2025, with police recording 67,735 cases nationwide.
Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department revealed telecommunications scams topped the list with 28,698 cases, followed by e-commerce fraud (14,881) and non-existent investment schemes (9,296). Investment scams inflicted the heaviest damage at RM1.37 billion, while telco fraud cost RM715.7 million and e-finance scams RM458.1 million.
Authorities urged immediate action: contact banks to freeze suspicious transactions and call the National Scam Response Centre hotline 997, then file a police report. The sharp surge in cybercrime highlights growing sophistication of scammers targeting investments, loans and romance victims.
