A Safer Holiday Shopping Season Online

Article contributed by Sophos

With the holiday season approaching, many of us find ourselves increasingly reliant on our work laptops, turning to them to shop for gifts and other items online. While this digital shift offers great ease and efficiency, it also introduces a new set of security challenges. As we embrace the convenience of online shopping, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect ourselves from potential cyber threats.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable online shopping experience this festive time, Sophos, a global leader in innovating and delivering cybersecurity as a service, offers the following tips:

Safe Account Details

Avoid using one account on multiple services and use guest login when available. Try not to use the same login credentials for multiple online services. If a service offers a guest login option, consider using it instead of creating a new account. Fewer passwords, fewer personal details, fewer problems if they get hacked.

Phishing Awareness

Be cautious of suspicious emails, messages, and pop-up ads that may trick you into revealing personal information or downloading malware. Don’t click on deals in email that look too good to be true or are from businesses you don’t have accounts from. These could be phising email hoping to bait you into clicking links to bogus, malicious web sites.

Use an ad blocker. They can help prevent you from being tracked by advertisers online which can be major sources of malicious links and deceptive content. Two of our favourite ad blocks that you can use are uBlock Origin and Ghostery.

Use private browsing or incognito mode. Enabling private browsing such as Firefox or incognito mode (Chrome) helps to ensure that your browsing history is not saved on the device you are using.

Secure Payment Practices

Use credit cards for online purchases, as they offer more protection than debit cards in case of fraudulent activity. Many credit card companies have robust fraud protection policies. Also, you will be in a position of power in a dispute as you can simply not pay your bill while disputing the charge, instead of having criminals directly drain your bank account of your hard-earned cash.

Don’t save card details. Many e-commerce sites will default to storing your credit card information in your profile for your “convenience” or their hope you’ll shop there again. They can’t lose what they don’t have, so them not to store your credit card unless it is absolutely necessary.

By understanding the risks and following these tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to cyberattacks and enjoy a safe and stress-free holiday shopping season.
