Singapore will also double down on investments in the sector, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced at the Asia Tech x Singapore conference.
Several initiatives were also announced to bolster Singapore’s tech sector. The country plans to add 300 megawatts of power to greener data centres and reserve another 200 megawatts for centres using green energy.
Public healthcare will transition to a cloud-based analytics platform called Healix from June, consolidating data for better research and cost efficiency.
Additionally, nearly S$300 million will be invested in quantum technology research, focusing on quantum processors and talent development. These initiatives aim to enhance energy efficiency, foster AI innovation, and position Singapore at the forefront of the technology.
Nearly S$300 million will be pumped into the field to drive research over the next five years. It is the largest single investment ever made, building on over S$400 million spent since 2002. The funds will go towards four areas, including designing and building quantum processors.
“We still don’t know how to construct the best quantum computers. This is a race. This is really a fight on the planet and we are progressing very fast,” says Professor José Ignacio Latorre, director of the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Quantum Technologies.
“Singapore is fantastically positioned in this space because Singapore started to work in the technologies 17 years ago,” he adds.
