Data centers in space have become the tech industry’s latest obsession, with SpaceX, Google, and Blue Origin leading ambitious projects. Elon Musk argues that “global electricity demand for AI simply cannot be met with terrestrial solutions,” pointing to space’s unlimited solar power and absence of real estate costs. Google’s Project Suncatcher aims to launch an orbital AI data center by 2027, while Blue Origin has applied to deploy 50,000 solar-powered satellites.
Nvidia has also introduced hardware tailored for space computing. Investors are pouring in, with startups like Starcloud hitting a $1.1 billion valuation. Yet critics highlight immense challenges: Rutgers physicist Matthew Buckley estimates each center would need solar panels covering 450 football fields, costing $20 billion to build and launch. Maintenance risks, space debris, and short lifespans further complicate feasibility. As analyst Kathleen Curlee noted, “You could put a data center in space… I just don’t see why you would.”
