Penang to Transform Three Squatter Settlements into Modern Homes in 2024

GEORGE TOWN: Penang plans to redevelop three squatter settlements in Seberang Perai—Kampung Manis (300 homes), Kampung Main Road (128 homes), and Kampung Ujung Batu (357 homes)—into modern residential areas in 2024. State housing chairman S Sundarajoo announced that the projects, part of the Rumah Mutiara Madani initiative, will provide larger, free homes to residents, with Kampung Manis and Kampung Ujung Batu prioritized. The state aims for zero squatter settlements, having delivered 166,607 affordable housing units (75.73% of the 220,000-unit goal by 2030). Additionally, 5,096 rent-to-own units and 6,814 urban renewal units have been achieved, surpassing initial targets.
