Survey Exposes Hidden Toll of Home Repairs on Families: Stress, Costs, and Recurring Issues
SHAH ALAM – Malaysian homeowners are increasingly burdened by recurring home maintenance problems that drain both their wallets and peace of mind, according to a nationwide survey by Nippon Paint and the Malaysian Institute of Property & Facility Managers (MIPFM). The study found that 87% of homeowners face waterproofing issues such as damp walls, leaks, and ceiling cracks, with 65% experiencing them within the past two years. Despite spending up to RM99 per square foot on repairs, fewer than half said their problems were permanently solved.
The report also revealed the emotional strain — 57% of respondents felt anxious about their homes, while 51% reported frustration. MIPFM president Haji Ishak bin Ismail said the findings highlight the urgent need for stronger standards and accountability in home maintenance. Nippon Paint Malaysia’s general manager Tay Sze Tuck emphasised that prevention, not just repair, is key to lasting solutions, urging homeowners to invest in proper waterproofing systems. The company offers a range of waterproofing products designed to protect critical areas such as roofs, bathrooms, and balconies.
