NEW: The U.S.-China Currency Clash – A Battle for Economic Supremacy
WASHINGTON, Feb 20 — US President Donald Trump will travel to China from March 31 to April 2 for talks with President Xi Jinping, the White House confirmed Friday. The announcement came just hours before the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s sweeping tariffs on imported goods, ruling that he had overstepped his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The tariffs, including 20% duties on Chinese exports, were tied to national emergencies related to fentanyl distribution and trade imbalances. The ruling raises fresh questions for US-China relations, which had recently stabilised after Trump trimmed tariffs in exchange for Beijing’s cooperation on fentanyl and critical minerals.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in Paris, welcomed the court’s decision, saying it showed the importance of counterweights to power in democracies. He added that France would adapt to Trump’s new 10% global tariff while continuing to export agricultural, luxury, fashion, and aeronautical goods. Macron stressed reciprocity as the fairest principle in trade.
