US–Malaysia Seal Defense Pact to Strengthen Cooperation Amid South China Sea Tensions

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia and the United States have signed a new defense pact to enhance bilateral cooperation and strengthen security in the South China Sea, marking a significant step in their strategic partnership. The memorandum of understanding was signed in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, witnessed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Malaysian Minister of Defence Mohamed Khaled Nordin, during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

Defense Pact

The agreement establishes a formal framework for defense collaboration between the two countries, covering joint training, expertise exchange, and maritime security capacity-building. Both nations also renewed an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement and committed to finalizing deals on communications, information sharing, and geospatial cooperation.

The pact comes amid heightened regional tensions, as China continues to assert expansive claims in the South China Sea. “Grey-zone tactics, such as hydrographic research conducted under the protection of foreign coast guard vessels, threaten sovereignty and are a clear provocation,” Khaled said.

Shared commitment

Hegseth’s visit follows President Donald Trump’s recent trip to Malaysia, during which both countries also signed a reciprocal trade agreement and pledged to collaborate on critical minerals. Khaled said the defense MoU reflected “a shared commitment to ensuring that regional waters remain safe, stable, and free for navigation,” reinforcing the growing strategic alignment between Washington and Kuala Lumpur in maintaining regional peace and maritime stability.
