Wall Street Slips Again as Yields Hit Multi-Decade High

Wall Street mixed as yields hit multi-decade highs; Europe weak, Asia mostly higher with Nikkei surging on tech rebound.

NEW YORK, Sept 30, 2026, Wall Street ended mixed on Wednesday as rising US Treasury yields overshadowed softer inflation data. The Dow fell 0.86% to 50,906.05 and the S&P 500 eased 0.25% to 7,651.54, while the Nasdaq rose 0.24% to 26,861.06. The 10-year yield climbed to 5.30%, its highest in decades, dampening sentiment despite a weaker-than-expected 0.2% rise in core PCE inflation.

Yields high

In Europe, markets closed lower, with the DAX down 0.79%, CAC 40 sliding 0.89% and FTSE 100 easing 0.29%, as higher eurozone inflation and rising yields weighed on equities. Asian markets were mostly higher, led by Japan’s Nikkei 225 which surged 1.94% to 66,753.72 on a tech rebound. The Hang Seng gained 0.37% and Shanghai Composite rose 0.31% ahead of the Golden Week holiday, while the Kospi slipped 0.48%.

Investors now await US payrolls data for clearer direction on the Federal Reserve’s next policy move.
