Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for advancing “national reunification” in a congratulatory message to Cheng Li-wun, Taiwan’s newly elected Kuomintang (KMT) leader. Cheng, a former lawmaker set to take office on November 1, won the leadership race amid claims of Chinese interference. Xi, speaking in his role as head of the Communist Party, urged both parties to “strengthen their common political foundation” and “deepen cooperation” to promote reunification.
Cheng, however, avoided direct mention of political union, instead emphasising ethnic ties and the need for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The KMT, traditionally supportive of closer ties with Beijing, remains China’s preferred dialogue partner, while Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims. Accusations of Chinese disinformation during the KMT election have intensified scrutiny of Beijing’s influence in Taiwan’s domestic politics. Taiwan News Photo
