Iron Deficiency Anaemia: Ramadan Risks for Malaysian Children
KUALA LUMPUR, 9 March 2026: As Malaysia approaches Ramadan, a hidden health challenge emerges: iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in children, impacting around 1 in 3 kids. This “silent epidemic,” often worsened by disrupted meal patterns during fasting, can lead to fatigue and stunted growth.
Factors such as erratic iron intake—favoring quick carbs over iron-rich foods—and barriers faced by low-income families amplify the risks. Practical solutions include pairing iron sources with vitamin C-rich foods for better absorption and early screenings to identify symptoms like pale skin.
Community initiatives, like the MYDIN-Danone (Dumex Dugro) partnership, aim to raise awareness through educational booths at Ramadan bazaars, offering free IDA risk assessments and nutritional guidance. Koh Kok Meng of Danone Malaysia emphasizes the commitment to fostering a strong nutritional foundation for children, supporting families during Ramadan with accessible resources and contributions to combat IDA.
